F.A.Q.

Please find below answers to the questions we are most commonly asked.

How much does a stairlift cost?

Stairlift prices vary depending upon the models and options chosen. You could expect to pay between £2,000 to £2,800 for a simple straight stairlift, since these are usually straightforward and easy to install. Since curved stairlifts are more complex, their cost is higher than a straight stairlift and so you could expect to pay upwards of £4,000 for a curved stairlift, depending upon the complexity of your staircase design and layout.

However, in order to provide an exact cost, several factors will need to be taken into consideration, which is why it is usually necessary to request a home survey before a written price quote can be given. You can request a free no-obligation home survey here (which will also be useful if you'd like to compare our prices with other quotes you may have received before making your final decision).

Factors which affect the price of a stairlift include: straight or curved track, possible obstructions at the top or bottom requiring hinged track, remedial work (for example, radiators moving or power points adding), powered options for hinge and folding mechanism, extended warranty, maintenance contracts and so on.

How soon can you fit my stairlift?

Stairlifts are supplied from stock components using modular rail system parts. Lead time is dependent upon stock levels and current workload schedules but straight and curved lifts can usually be fitted within one to five working days after placing your order.

If your need is urgent, your stairlift can often be fitted the very next day.

How long will the installation take?

Straight lifts can usually be installed within 2 hours and more complex lifts can take approximately 4 to 5 hours. Following installation, the technician will demonstrate how to safely operate the lift and will be able to answer any questions you may have about using your new stairlift.

How safe and reliable are the stairlifts?

The stairlifts have all been independently tested and certified to comply with the following standards for stairlifts:

  • BS EN 81-40:2020 European Safety Standard: Specification for Powered Lifts
  • ISO 9386-2:2000 International Standard for Stairlifts
  • CE mark to applicable European Directive(s).

This includes testing to a minimum of 25,000 return journeys, the equivalent to 11 years of use assuming six return journeys every day. The installation engineers also work through a rigorous 37-point checklist as part of the fitting process.

Therefore, as a result of their exemplary build quality and rigorous testing procedures, you'll find the stairlifts are all very safe and very reliable.

Can other people still use the stairs if I have a stairlift fitted?

Yes. Their slimline design, foldaway footplate, seat and armrests enable a straight lift to be fitted 330mm from the wall and a curved lift 355mm from the wall.

Even on the minimum width of stairs this would only cover about half of the width of the step and, if the stairlift is parked at the top or bottom, the usable step width would increase by 95mm for the straight lift and 155mm for the curved lift.

Will I need to re-decorate after my stairlift has been fitted?

Since your new stairlift is fitted to your stairs and not to your wall, there should be no need for any major re-decoration after your stairlift has been installed.

However, if you have a handrail that needs to be removed, you may decide to perform some patching up where the handrail used to be fixed to the wall.

Can I still use my stairlift if there's a power cut?

Yes. Modern stairlifts run on DC battery power which means they will carry on working even in the event of a power cut.

The batteries should provide enough power in order for you to complete your trip (and possibly even a few more), however, the batteries will not recharge until the power supply is restored. There is also a hand winding option for use in emergency situations only to move the stairlift position on the carriage, should it stop before the charge points.

How easy are the stairlifts to mount and dismount?

All stairlifts feature swivel seats operated by a paddle control as standard, allowing you to safely mount/dismount the lift. This swivel seat also enables you to dismount straight onto the landing, without twisting your body.

What is the maximum weight a stairlift can accommodate?

Stairlifts are certified to the international stairlift safety standards with a maximum weight limit that is applied for safety.

The straight stairlifts are tested to carry 127kg / 20st and the heavy duty lift has a maximum of 159kg / 25st.

The curved rail stairlift can carry 120kg / 19st.

It is vital that a stairlift is used by only one person at a time in order to keep the stairlift safe.

How quiet are the stairlifts?

It is a common misconception that stairlifts are noisy when actually current designs are very quiet, similar to the same level of noise from a small microwave.

As they operate on low voltage, there is very little noise and they offer a very smooth and comfortable ride.

How fast does the stairlift travel?

Stairlift speed is set to ensure your ride feels safe and is comfortable.

They travel up to a maximum speed of 0.34mph or 15cm per second, whether straight or curved models.

What happens if the stairlift is at the opposite end of the stairs when I need to use it?

All the stairlifts are supplied with wireless remote control handsets which are left at the top and bottom of the stairs to remotely call the stairlift to the correct position for use.

If more than one person needs to use the stairlift, the lift can be operated 'empty' along the track ready for the second user.

Does my stairlift come with a warranty?

Yes, a 12-month warranty is standard on all stairlifts with the option to extend this by a further 4 years. The extended warranty includes priority assistance, annual servicing and the costs of any call-outs, parts and labour, if any should be required.

Do you service and repair stairlifts?

Yes, a maintenance and repair service is available (this service is currently only available for stairlifts which have been purchased in conjunction with our stairlift partner).

As you would expect, an 'after sales' service is a very important aspect with stairlifts as customers rely on them for their independence.

With this in mind, after purchasing your stairlift you'll receive access to a dedicated freephone 24-hour help desk team who are available to call 365 days per year.

Teams of skilled technicians are available throughout the UK and we recommend that you have your stairlift serviced annually for optimum reliability and long-term trouble free performance. The optional extended warranty will provide you with priority assistance 365 days per year, which also covers the costs of any call-outs, parts and labour, if any should be required.
